10 year old lab

I am thinking of adopting a 10 year old lab, my husband said that she is too old and will start getting a lot of problems now, she is overweight and has not been spayed, do you think we could get her in shape and that she would have a longer life expectancy? we cant take her to the vet to find out because I dont want to offend the lady I am getting her from but she does not have any medical history for her. What do you think we should do? and how long do you think she would live?

I think its suspicious that the owner cannot tell you any background info. on the dog, take the dog to a vet as soon as possible and get her checked.

Ditto to editor!! I LOVE the old guys…they’re mellow, sweet, easy to work with…housetrained, and sleep a lot…:) I wouldn’t worry about offending this person, by taking this dog to the vet…they kept her going for 10 years, so they must have taken care of her in some ways…Labs can be relatively long lived for a large dog…I’ve seen them as old as 18…tho I think 14 to 16 would be the average life span. She’s probably got a little arthritus, so take it easy “getting her into shape”…but I can tell you that my 14 year old Westie, is waiting with a smile on her face every morning…raring to go for our morning walk…she LOVES it.

Go for it…give this girl a wonderful place to spend her golden years.

Most dogs live to the age of around 13 years old. However, I would be suspicious about the lady you are buying the dog from, all owners should have some sort of beckground history of the dog. I do think that with a good exercise routine and firm guidance from your part, she would be a lovely dog. I reccommend you take her to a vet soon after purchase to check for any health concerns but I wish you the best of luck!

I think it’s amazing when people adopt senior dogs. The dogs need someone to love them at the most critical time of their lives. Senior dogs are already housebroken, extremely loyal and don’t get into trouble like puppies. I say take the dog in for a regular vet checkup first to see if there are any major health concerns. If not, go for it. Even if the dog only lives another 3 or 4 or 5 years, that’s half a decade you could have her in your life–and you’ll make all the difference in hers.

Answer #5

Well it kind of depends on the way the dog is being treated right now. If you were to adopt it,Id definitely recommend bringing it to te vet, just to make sure its healthy and there are no major problems. Id also get one of those healthy dogfoods that help them to maintain their weight,if the dog is old, that extra weight could really put a damper on its bones.
