I just found out my dad has type 2 diabetes..

He just called on the phone, since I don’t live with him, and he said that he has type 2 diabetes! He was in the hospital because he was dehydrated and now he has to take medication. I’m so scared for him and I don’t know anything about diabetes, can it make your life shorter?!?! Also should he stop smoking because he smokes a lot and can smoking make diabetes worse? What should I say to him to make him feel better? =(

I was diagnose with type I diabeties and I decide I wanted to live a long time to be with my 3 boys and my husband of 6 years. If he change his way of eating and doing other unhealthy things the table could turn for him. Sometimes people feel they need a reason to live not realizing that when they were born was reason enough. God has us all hear for a reason. We have to want to live. What made me change my health and ways of eating I had started to lose my sight and it is frusating having difficult to see. I got unable to read stories to my children, read the bible, newspaper, and do college class on line. The one thing that matters to me the must was my writing career and how was I to presume it and couldn’t see. I had to take those things that matters to me the most and use them for my advantage to change. So my advice to you would be find out what matters to your father and let him understand how difficult it is to lose that which matters the must. Let him know how much you care about him and want him to be around and help him change.

ok, hold on, my dad has had diabetes since my birth 15 years ago(its the worse kind, I don’t know which one’s worse) and he is doing fine other than some minor unrelated colon bumps. all that diabetes requires is for you to either take a pill or injection of insulin (the stuff that keeps too much sugar out of your blood) to regulate the amount of sugar in the blood, and he will do this 2 or 3 times a day. I would definitely NOT worry about your dad right now, he’s going to be fine. Smoking is just bad on its own, he shouldnt do it anyways, but it wont affect the diabetes from developing, unfortunately yes it will make his life shorter, but not enough for you to worry, he’s got at least 20 years. as for how to cheer him up, I cant help you, but good luck with it, you’ve got my prayers.
