Is it common to have vivid hallucinations just before falling asleep and when waking up?

I have this all the time. As I’m falling asleep is when it’s worse. I literally think I am somewhere else, and it’s different from dreaming because I’m not actually asleep at that point. If there’s people around me I’m usually mildly aware of their presence, but ignore it for the most part. I’ve had a few instance though where a friend has tried to talk to me when I’m at this point and all she gets is garbled nonsense as a response from me. Does anyone else experience this? I think I heard somewhere that it happens to everyone, but most people I talk to don’t have it to the same degree as I do.

That happens to me too.. especially when I’m really tired.. I remember laying down and looking out my window, and I could have sworn I saw someone outside.. I could describe him in details.. but I was just seeing things. It’s so weird. People know not to ask me things when I first wake up, because a few hours later I won’t really remember it.. (that’s how my dad got $50 out of me) lol..

I think this may have happend to me, once, but it wasnt to a big extent. Like, I was falling asleep on my mother’s couch because I slept over there and I thought that my nose ring was something else, like a creature stuck on me so I took it out and threw it behind the couch and when I woke up it all came back to me like a dream and I searched for and found my nose ring. Sometimes when I get trashed, all the events from that night that took place while I was wasted, come back to me like a dream in the morning.

Actually, there are different stages of sleep, one being barely asleep but still concious of whats going on around you…all the way to deep sleep. I believe there are 4-5 stages. You might want to read up on it its actually pretty interesting. In the first few stages of sleep you are in fact sleeping to an extent but you are still concious to whats going on around you…so dreams or thoughts running through your mind may seem like hallucinations..this is also why you may talk or communicate with someone else in your sleep.

LOL I wouldn’t doubt I would fall for that. :P
