It CAN take up to three days and depends on a number of factors, including your metabolism, how healthy you are and how well you chew your food. Generally however it should take about a day to fully digest, but it can take as long as 3 days.

Answer #8

“if this is true no more red meat for me”

The thing is, Kirsten, meat does not take that long to digest - and that’s the problem!

We have long, convoluted intestinal tracts, more than 10 times our body length if you uncoil them, because vegetable fiber takes two or three days to digest, and that’s what we’re designed to eat. Carnivores, on the other hand, have much more powerfully acidic enzymes and short intestinal tracts that digest the meat and spit it out rapidly. We are able to digest meat thoroughly only because we cook it. But then the digested meat hangs around inside our herbivorous intestines for at least another couple of days, and bits of it for much longer. Remember, we’re at nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit in there. Imagine how a nice serving of meat would look and smell after sitting out on your kitchen counter for a few days in the summer heat. That’s more or less how it rots inside us, producing carcinogens and other toxins by its putrefaction that we absorb, hosting unfriendly micro-organisms, etc.

Just one of several excellent reasons to avoid a meat-based diet - along with the massive contribution that industrial meat-production makes to global poverty and dislocation, global warming (or meltdown), and other environmental destruction, and the grossly inhumane treatment of animals destined for the slaughterhouse.
