How does feeling guilty effect the religious aspect of things?

When some people comitt sin, such as adultery, and such, how does feeling guilty effect the religious aspect of things? I know, I’ve done some things where I had to confess. I felt real guilty afterwords. Why do people that follow a religion feel guilty? Since I follow a religion, I feel guilty if I don’t tell my leader certain things. I’m just wondering what your thoughts and opinions would be on this one.

Answer #1

I dont believe in sin to the point that “GOD will through you in hell” or as the bible says but I do live by a moral code. You dont have to have religion to feel guilt

Answer #2

Are you asuming people who arent religious dont feel guilty? Given that you dont need the threat of hell to feel guilty (hopefully you have learnt how to internally regulate right and wrong) that doesnt make much sense… As for why do religious people feel guilty, because they are taught to feel bad about a lot of things (depending on which religion it is) everything is apparently a sin against God, meaning you’re going to hell, meaning you’re going to feel bad. Not the most pleasant way to live, but each to their own

Confession is good for the soul, and Gods way. However, I do my confessing to him, and not to man.

By confessing what we have done wrong, we are following Gods commands…

It is his will for us to see our wrongdoings, and to turn from them, accepting the power from him, to forsake them, and be free from their control.

If we learn to live by and thru the power of his spirit, and allow the fruit of his spirit to grow in our lives, we will have little confessing to do. The more his spirit grows within us, the less hold the enemy has over our lives.

Seek to go good, and refrain from evil.

Answer #4

Everyone has a conscious. that parts tells you if you did something wrong…it is given to us by God…what you do about it is up to you…you can run and hide from God or ask him to forgive you…It takes a lifetime of sin and thumbing your nose at God to end up in hell… just ask for forgiveness…and don’t do the sin anymore…if you do ..God is ready to forgive you…He loves us…hell wasen’t made for us…originally.. guilt condems us…it’s about accepting his forgiveness… God doesn’t want you to feel condemed …he wants you to be free…

Answer #5

its called conviction. it happens so that you know you have sinned and you can repent. but if you still feel bad thats condemnation and thats not of god since there is no condemnation to those that are in christ. (if you believe in christ) so if you do believe in christ and you still feel bad just know that there is therefore no condemnation to those that are in christ, if you are trully sorry (god knows your heart)and repent when you are forgiven you dont got to worry about it nemore.

Answer #6

A feeling of guilt among religious people, at least in the Western religions, is based on the concept that “confession is good for the soul”. In these religions, when you have done something considered wrong or sinful, you are taught to confess that wrongdoing in order to be free of the burden of guilt. You’ve been conditioned to feel guilty for doing things your religion considers wrong, and taught to tell someone about it, in a repentant way.
