How do I get my 21 month old to understand what pee pee means?

Im a stay at home mom and im sick of buying diapers! My son is 21 months old and when I ask him if he needs to go pee pee he says yea… so I take him to the bathroom and stand him on a stool, put cherrios in the potty and tell him to sink them. Well he gets really mad cause he doesn’t want to sink them he wants to get them out and eat them. Or he just wants to play with things in the bathroom and that leaves me really frustrated and I just don’t want to do it anymore!!! Can someone please give me some advice???

Bring him in with you when you go, or have him go in with his dad. It’s a teaching method. Say something like, look I used the potty and praise yourself. He will want the same praise. Also, you can use the potty ring. I prefer it to the stool as it’s just one more lesson they have to learn. They don’t usually begin learning by standing anyways. It helps if you sit them down and run water in the sink. I’m working on training my two year old brother, and my seven year old trained starting at two as well.

Boys are harder to potty train. Weird huh? I think the best way is to let him run naked out side now and then, but its really only good if you live in the country.

it is awesome that he is even interested in the potty at 21 months. most little boys I know are well into their two’s before that comes. my nephew gets a skittle after he peepee’s in the potty. I’ve heard it is easier to sit them on the big potty (with the smaller ring and the pee guard in the front), instead of the training potty- just one less transition. I keep my daughter in cloth diapers during the day to cut down on waste and money. they’ve come a long way (no more safety pins!) let me know if you need more info on those. hope that helps.

Dear adensmomma06, It’s obvious he isn’t ready. Don’t rush it or you will in the end prolong it. Male children on the average are 3 when they are trained. This insures good understanding and at this age they have less accidents. Give him some time and try again in about 6 months. If you’re tired of buying diapers then get cloth ones but you must not pressure him or it will end up being longer and more difficult. Sue…good luck

This may sound wierd but my little one used to follow me to the toilet so asumed something was going on in there that they wanted to do to . From there they got there potty in the toilet and could use it when they wanted to. Children learn by seeing. My neice was out of nappys at 15 months.
