How would you handle a young child that runs out the door and close to traffic every time you place him in time out?

Answer #1

Locks that are placed higher on the door for one - it shouldnt be that easy for young child to open the door and walk out of the house for numerous safety reasons.

Answer #2

Put locks high on the door so the child can’t reach it and get out

Answer #3

That’s what I would have done. I am watching Super Nanny, and every time this 3 or 4 year old gets put in time out, he runs out the house and runs down the sidewalk, close to traffic. He even grabbed his scooter and rode off once. The doors weren’t even locked…I don’t understand why they didn’t just lock the door, put the locks higher up, or get one of those safety knobs for the door. They acted like there was nothing they could do.

Answer #4

They should be took right back to time out, and their bad behaviour should be talked with them about. They need to understand why it was bad.

Answer #5

There are strict laws regarding the types of locks that can be used in child care provision - imagine if there was a fire, and nobody could get in or out because all the doors had been bolted. There will be at least one ground floor level fire door with a panic bolt at toddler level and it would be illegal to lock that door or otherwise prevent it from opening from the inside when pushed.

Answer #6

Reward him when he does something right, the more times he earns treats is the less likely he is to throw tantrums. If he does continue come up with another method instead of time out.

Answer #7

I would have just brought one of those barriers for doorways- adults can step over it but kids can’t. We even made one for our puppy :O
