Whats the difference between being catholic and christian?

Wts the difference between being catholic and christian?

Answer #1

Being a Christian is a decision everyone makes in their hearts. It is not saying, “I belong to this church, or that church” but deciding to accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour and putting Him in control of your life. Putting God in control means that we love Him and will follow His Word, the Bible. By following Jesus, and with His help, we are able to withstand temptation and not sin. So you see, Christianity is not only a religion, or a church, it is a way of life and a decision each one of us has to make.

Answer #5

Catholicism is one of many strands of Christianity. The two are not actually separate religions, although Catholics and Protestants sometimes consider each other as such.

The main differences between Catholicism and the Protestant denominations are: belief in the sanctity of the virgin Mary, the role of baptism and the catechisms in salvation, belief in the intercession of the saints, belief in the authority of the Pope, and the role of the priest vs. pastor in the Christian congregration. There is also some dispute about social vs. individual Christianity, the role of the church in society, and the nature of sin and human’s relationship with God, although not as much as in the past.

Answer #6

well catholics and considered the same but have few differances like catholics confess sins to the priest an chirstians just pray to god so he will forgive them

Answer #7

You can be a Catholic and a Christian, but being A Christian does not imply you are a Catholic. A car is Crhistinity. Catholics are Toyotas. Replace that in the previous sentence to bring the point home.

Catholics follow the Pope, worship God. the bible, tradition, hold mass, a bit of sacraments, and intercession of Saints.

Christians as a religion is usually a sect other than catholic. they follow (for the most part) the Bible, pray, and hold mass, and worship God.

Answer #8

catholicism worships and reveres the saints and apostles. they pay homage to the roman catholic church in rome also known as the vatican. the pope is the spiritual leader of the catholic religious belief.

christianity is a belief system that later got turned into a religion. they follow the practices and teachings of jesus. aren’t supposed to worship in a church but most do anyway.

catholicism is a branch of judea christian beliefs as are mormon, pentecostal, baptist and so on.

Answer #9

Catholic: Their authority is Scripture AND tradition Salvation is received at baptism, may be lost by mortal sin & regained by penance Priests are mediators between God and man Purgatory Prayers to saints

Protestant: Scripture alone Salvation is the result of divine grace and is unconditional God saves anyone with faith, regardless of Church membership Priesthood of all believers

Answer #10

Catholicism is a branch of Christianity. It isn’t a different religion but the practices are different. If Martin Luther (not Martin Luther King Jr.’s dad) didn’t start Protestantism, then everyone would probably be Catholic. Some of the practices are alike and different. If you are a Catholic, when you sin, you go to confession. And most Catholics do the sign of the cross on their chest (or sometimes their face) other Christians don’t.

Answer #15

I am shocked and surprised every time I see people implying that Catholicism is not Christianity. (The people above are not doing that, but they do recognise that sometimes it happens.) A Christian is someone who acknowledges Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, having a personal relationship with Him through prayer, worship, Bible reading and fellowship with other Christians. In any church you will find some people who just ‘go along’ and don’t actually have that personal relationship.

My experience of Catholic churches, Methodist churches, Anglican churches and evangelical churches is that there are committed Christians in all of them. Some churches do make it easier to ‘be churchy’ without that personal relationship with Jesus. Sometimes I feel that the amount of ritual and what I would consider ‘extraneous belifs’ (like Marianism for example) makes it easier to be a ‘good Catholic’ without actually being a Christian. But I could pick on other churches too, because it seems to me that each church has within it its own barriers to Christian living (believe it or not).

I have known wonderful Christian Catholics. Some of them were part of the Renewed Catholic movement which is extremely similar to many protestant movements. Others were ‘mainstream’. I personally find some Catholic beliefs difficult to cope with, but so long as we are united in Christ I am happy to call them sisters and brothers in faith.

Answer #16

Protestantism was a political rather than a religious invention. King Henry VIII had originally married Catherine of Aragon. In the mid-1520’s, he met and fell in love with Ann Boleyn. He wished to annul his marriage to Catherine and marry Ann.

When the pope wouldnt do this, Henry did what every other king would do. He fired his closest advisor Cardinal Wolsey, the Lord Chancellor of England. The negotiations with the papal court were largely carried out by Wolsey. When he failed, Henry dismissed and arrested him and replaced him with Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell. Both these men were sympathetic to the new ideas of Martin Luther. They gave the king some radical advice: if the pope does not grant the annulment, then split the English church off from the Roman church. Rather than the pope, the king would be the spiritual head of the English church.

The Catholic Church was started by Jesus

Answer #17

Obedience has to be taken a first step in either worshipping the right living God. The god of this age has blinded many of this world. so on… even the believers are blinded in many ways because of disobedience. we meet the criteria. all of us are subjected to the word of God. Christianity is today diluted with all types of teachings and thats the seriosness. When you read the bible take the considerations what it says and obey simply. if it says no other gods before The Creator then obey it. so the difference will be met by the Grace of God almighty Yehweh,. We must understand that simply Jesus did not come down to waste precious time and leave the souls behind. -cleret Goa india Cleretfernandes@hotmail.com

Answer #20

OK guys…if you can take the time to scroll through the stuff above…a SHORT history lesson:

Around the year 0 (though actually, according to most biblical scholars, in the year 6 A.D.), this guy named Jesus was born.
At that time, that region of the world (Europe and the Middle East) was ruled by the pagan Romans, but Jesus was born into a Jewish community. Got that? JEWISH COMMUNITY.
Jesus, I believe, was the son of man (but that's beside the point). He walked around preaching, and when he died, some Jews, who believed that Jesus had been the long-awaited Messiah, split from the Jewish Temple and formed Christianity. Those who weren't very impressed with Jesus went on being Jewish. (Later, a guy named Muhammad came along, and asked the Jews to change their ways again, although he never claimed to be the Messiah. Muhammad's followers split from the Jewish Temple and formed Islam. And the Jews are STILL waiting for that Messiah).
Christianity grew rapidly. After the fall of the Roman Empire (which was Christian itself at the end), all of Europe was Christian. EVERYONE was CATHOLIC, but they weren't CALLED Catholic, because there weren't any PROTESTANTS. Everyone was just "Christian".
But this monk, Martin Luther, disliked the amount of power the church had. He hated how corrupt the Church was--selling indulgences (a piece of paper you could buy from a church official that would supposedly keep you out of Hell) in order to pay for the costs of building places like the Vatican. He also thought the church's worship of relics was silly, as well as the fact that only priests were allowed to read the Bible. So Luther, in short, began forming the Protestant church. Those who didn't become Protestant came to be called Catholic, with the Pope as their head. But everyone was Christian, because everyone believed that Jesus Christ was the Messiah.
Part of the whole point of Protestantism was that everyone could read the Bible for themselves. As soon as people started doing that, they all started arguing about how the bible should be interpreted, and so they all split into a million little Protestant churches with a million names and a billion differences. ANY CHRISTIAN CHURCH THAT ISN'T CATHOLIC IS PROTESTANT.
Some of the things that Luther disliked about the Catholic Church have changed, but many are still there. Catholics still operate under the Pope, as well as a hierarchy of canons, archbishops, bishops, cardinals, priests, etc. Some Protestant Churches have similar hierarchies.
Anyway, I hope this helps y'all understand where all these dang churches came from.
