For a concept that is so ubiquitous today, the actual definition of “robot” is very hard to nail down, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a group of people who agree on it 100%. However, generally speaking, a robot is defined by those machines that display some or all of the following characteristics:

  • It’s man-made
  • It can move on its own
  • It can interact with objects in its environment
  • It can be programmed

This covers a huge array of machines, from science vehicles like the Martian rovers to ASIMO the Honda robot to those Robosapien toys you can pick up at Wal-Mart. Obviously, with such a wide range of robots, whether or not they are all “out for good” is up for debate. Factory robots that help assemble motherboards or cars are definitely helpful in terms of their speed and productivity, but I don’t see ASIMO contributing a lot to the betterment of society.
