How do I treat my dog's paws?

My dog seems to be scratching a lot! Its on his paws too. He seems to be biting them too! What could be possibly have? Could it be food allergies? He’s been eating Pedigree for more than 3 years and he never really had a problem. Should I change his food? If so, what are the best brands? Thanks in advance.

My dog chews on her paws when they are sore, it’s really not a big deal and for the scratching see if e has flees.

Thats weird, my Chihuahua has been doing the same. I have him a spa day yesterday, gave him a bath with soothing organic shampoo, trimmed his nails and cleaned his ears and the scratching and biting has decreased a bit.

I doubt its caused by the food. I think its probably an environmental allergy. Have you started using any new cleaners or anything like that? It could simply be caused by the outside, just giving him a bath and see if it helps.

As for food, I make all my own dog food. Commercial food is full of chemicals and preservatives I don’t like my baby boys to have.

It sounds like an allergy if he’s scratching and biting a lot. You said he’s been eating the food for 3 years, if this behavior is just now surfacing I don’t think it would be the food now. Have you added anything new to your home? New rugs, plants, flooring, paint, anything of that sort? Also, what kind of weather have you been having? Dogs are also prone to seasonal allergies (look into hydro-cortizone spray). It’s possible it could be a fungal infection on the paws. Pay attention to where on his paws he bites; is it on the pads? If so, check them for cracks. Dehydration or heat can cause them to crack and become irritated, in which case a moisturizer will be a good investment.

Most likely you’ll need to take him to the vet just to be sure. If he starts scratching his ears too it could be a systematic yeast infection, which is something some vets will miss initially.
