There are times when we need a burst of power to climb a hill or to accelerate to merge with expressway traffic. It is certainly safer to quickly pass another vehicle on 2 way roads even if doing so means you will temporarily exceed the speed limit. All of this said, most cars in the US are much faster and more powerful than they need to be. I can remember when a car that could go from 0-60 MPH in 10 seconds was a fast car but now a bottom of the line Honda Civic can accelerate faster than this. Engines have significantly improved since the energy crisis of the 70’s but instead of using this technology to make cars go farther on a gallon of gasoline we have built larger and more powerful vehicles that get about the same mileage. Certainly cars should have some reserve power for passing, climbing, and merging but there are vehicles that double even triple the highest speed limits in the US.

Answer #5

That’s right. You could theoretically drive your car to maximum speed if you ever find an autobahn that isn’t completely overcrowded with trucks and traffic jams. :)

But if, by chance, you drive on a German autobahn at 3 am in a rural area with no local speed limit…. 260 km/h Ye-haaaaw!

Answer #6

Well the speed limit is there because that is whats deemed “safe” for you, other cars on the road and any pedestrians. I have to disagree with some speed limits in certain areas of where I live. Such as one “Highway” that is a POS, but is set at 60MPH, while other roads in better condition, are not technically highways, so they are rated at 35MPH. As for the ability for higher speeds, is as filletofspam said. Sometimes that extra HP is needed (Jumping into traffic, passing, getting outa the way of an accident). Although a lot of cars are getting ridiculous - their top speed w/o an governor is over 2x the highest speed limit in the country? Thats a bit much.

Because you can go racing on private racing tracks for money…. but we don’t want THAT on public roads. ;) http://funadvice.com/r/157cacbq4os
