Is it OK to wear clothes that show scars?

So, when I was younger I used to cut my upper arms. Time has past but the scars remain, and the doc says they will always be there. I have always made sure to pick clothes that hide the scars but I’m getting frustrated by it.

My question is, is it okay to wear clothes that show the scars? or would that just be completely disturbing?

Tattoos are an expensive fix to covering over scars. Not really the best suggestion. Think about it, if you get a tattoo, people are going to want to see it, which draws attention to your arm, which draws attention to the scars. I know, because I did it myself. I have scars on my left wrist and a tattoo over them. People see the tattoo, they see the scars, they ask where they came from- it becomes uncomfortable, especially with strangers because I’m not about to go into my life story with a stranger about how/why I used to cut myself.

If your cuts are midway between your elbow and shoulder, consider short sleeves with some length to them. Some short sleeve shirts have sleeves that end somewhere in the middle of the shoulder to elbow area. Or try 3/4 sleeves. In the meantime, if you want to smooth your scars out and make them appear less noticeable, try using Palmer’s Cocoa Butter- I’ve been using on my thigh for years now and my scars are less noticeable. Above all, just be confident with whatever you are wearing, if you are self-conscious that people are staring at your scars, it’s going to drive you crazy. If you carry yourself like they aren’t even there, people most likely won’t have the nerve to actually say anything about them.

I don’t have experience with cutting but I do have it with scars. I was in a huge motorcycle accident that left my whole right side, from the hip to my foot nothing but a mass of scars. This was 3.5 years ago. For the first couple of years all I could think was that I will never be able to wear shorts or dresses in public again. Every time I looked at my leg I would get so upset I would have to take medicine to calm me down. Trust me, my scars would send small children screaming in fear, lol All I could think of was saving money for plastic surgery to get rid of them. One day I woke up and saw what they really were. They were/are a part of what makes me who I am. I went thru something horrible and I lived thru it.

You have went thru something horrible too and you have survived it. Don’t be embarrassed about your scars. They are part of you. They are a testament to what you have went thru and what you have survived. If dumbass people make a comment about them just tell them that it was from a bad time in your life but you are now stronger and better for having gone thru it all.

I have experience with cutting, and was always trying to hide the scars. But then I began to use Bio Oil every morning and night and in about 2 weeks they were noticably reduced in visibility. I have been using it for sometime, and mine are less noticable. But dont get me wrong, they havent gone completely…it just reduces the appearance. You can get that from most places that sell skin products..

Also you can get special creams from the doctors or the pharmacy, as someone else mentioned on here… If you just to to the person from which you are getting the creams from, they will help you find the best one for you.

I hope I’ve helped Take care all the best Lizzy

Also, you can buy this stuff from Walmart called Mederma. It did help lighten some fo the smaller scars that I had. It is a little expensive but a little goes a long way.

Answer #5

hun…I can completley understand this problem because I has the same one…who care show umm screw what they say as long as your past it

Answer #6

they are pretty noticable.. the bigger ones are like half an inch in width and a few inches in length. There are lots of smaller ones too. ugh..

What kind of makeup would I use to cover them?

Answer #7

yer theres a couple of things you can help cover them with or make them less noticable. make-up would work. also theres a few creams and things out there that can help make them a lot less visable. you could check out your local pharmacy or similar place and ask the people at the counter. either way you shouldnt feel like you cant wear clothes youd like to wear just because of them. if you didnt want a tattoo over them you could also try henna, or transfer tattoos or other quick but not permanent methods

Answer #8

I agree with jaceb So what if you used to cut as long as you don’t anymore it does not matter.

Answer #9

Make up a good story for why the scars are there… and if people think you use to cut… who cares.

Answer #10

powder cover-up

or try mederma (I think that’s what it’s called) its supposed to reduce the visibility of scars

Answer #11

it depends, how visible are the scars?

Answer #12

I used to hide mine, and then I got tired and said to hell with it. Wear whatever you want. Honestly people notice less than you think they do. And they rarely ever say anything. The only people who’ve ever mentioned it to me are people who eventually became good friends of mine. People really are too self absorbed to care. And no it’s not disturbing!
