Can someone's environment cause depression?

I know a girl who used to be very popular, social, and was very well liked. She started highschool and went in knowing only one other person. She had a very hard time making friends and started to have self esteem issues. Later that year, she was diagnosed with depression and social anxiety disorder. Is there any way that the change in her environment caused the depression?

Answer #1

Yes having only one friend in highschool could have been part of the reason why she became depressed. Having one friend or no friends when once being popular will make someone feel as they arent good enough and cause self esteem issues which often are accompanied by depression. At least that is my opinion
