I just mentioned this in my other post, but I’ll say it again: you’re the only one who can make you happy. Counselors can HELP you sort out your feelings and figure out what makes you depressed, and that’s it. Start writing in a journal and show it to your counselor on your next visit.

And stay away from depression pills. They only mess you up even more.

I know what the feeling is like, first-hand. A lot of people assume that whatever professional(s) they go to–they’re stuck with them. You’re the one getting treatment and you should feel comfortable and safe with a mental health professional during psychotherapy, after all, if you’re miserable then that defeats the whole purpose of getting help. Any ethical counselor will know that and should be willing to work with you to find someone who you feel comfortable with. You can also consult with a psychiatrist so he or she may assess your current situation for recommendation of psychotropics (meds) and/or psychotherapy. You hang in there and take care!! :-) -S

what are you passionate about? what kinds of things do you enjoy? I know sometimes when you are depressed even the things you like dont seem appealing…do them anyway…eventually this discipline will pay off.

Alot of times what makes being depressed worse is just sitting around thinking about it. Its sort of like having a wound and just staring at it asking it ‘why dont you hurry up and heal dammit?!?!” But if you just dress it properly and go about your business…not thinking about the wound every second…pretty soon you start to notice it heals…little bit at a time.

Drugs have helped some people…and even though im not a fan of many perscription drugs…some people wouldnt be able to function without them. Id consider them as a last resort after you have tried some other things first…and then make sure you do lots of research and get lots of ‘second opinions’ from medical professionals and people who use those medicines.

Ultimately most of our problems start in our mind. People let their thoughts wander wherever they go…and this helps you feel ‘out of control’. I believe in the power of the human will…in self determinism…not in fate or blind chance. We may not be able to control everything that happens to us…but we have a lot of influence over how we handle the things that happen to us…our attitude…our out look on things.

One last thing…think about how your ‘self talk’ is. Do you find yourself thinking ‘im no good’, ‘i suck’, ‘i can’t do that’…or other negative things? This kind of thinking HAS to stop if you want to make progress. First of all no one is such a complete failure in life that they can say things like that and have them all be true. Determine to tell yourself the truth about yourself…recognizing both the good and the bad. If you tell yourself the truth about yourself…then you will admit that you have many good things and maybe some bad things too. This is different maybe in some ways from ‘positive thinking’ which encourages people sometimes to say things that arent even realistic and when we know those things arent realistic we dont really believe them anyway. If you tell yourself the truth you can believe in it. If there are things you dont like about yourself then tell yourself the truth that you can change those things…because you can…we are not doomed to stay the same our entire lives…life is full of possibilities and potential…explore that potential.

Anyway, im not a psychologist…but even psychologists need counselling. We are all in this together…most of us need the same things in life…to do something we enjoy and be recognized for it or enjoy it…have meaningful relationships and emotional bonds…have good boundaries around us so we feel ‘safe’ and respected by others…physical security with shelter and food and clothing…etc…life isnt complicated really when you think about what our basic needs are. WE are social beings…we want to love and be loved, know and be known, and to enjoy the ‘doing’ of the things we do in life. Find out what things you enjoy and do them…make meaningful bonds with family and friends…get enough sleep and eat good…its not rocket science…and almost all of us already know what we should be doing better that we arent. And all of this advice i just gave you i give to myself every single day because i need it too :) Good luck and God bless!
