where did the christian got the name for their religion? has christianity mentioned in the bible?
"Christus" is the Latin form of old Greek "Χριστός" which was a title that early Christians used for Jesus of Nazareth.
The on-line etymology dictionary says:
Christ title given to Jesus of Nazareth, O.E. crist, from L. Christus, from Gk. khristos "the anointed" (translation of Heb. mashiah; see messiah), verbal adj. of khriein "to rub, anoint" (see chrism). The L. term drove out O.E. hæland "healer" as the preferred descriptive term for Jesus. A title, treated as a proper name in O.E., but not regularly capitalized until 17c. Pronunciation with long -i- is result of Irish missionary work in England, 7c.-8c. The ch- form, regular since c.1500, was rare before. Capitalization of the word begins 14c. but is not fixed until 17c.
in old Greek "Χριστός"(kjristos),in hebrew "meshiajk" or messiah, both meaning annointed.Kings and priests of ancient Israel were anointed with oil when appointed to the office and thus were a prophetic type of "THE anointed" or the Christ, wich was the "promised seed" prophesized all along the so called "old testament", starting from Genesis 3:15. Did you know that that prophecy was the very main subject of the wholle Bible?
the word christian is mentioned in Acts.... they got their name because early christians (people who believed in Jesus before Christianity got it's name) were being persecuted by the Romans. They made fun of the believers and called them Christians which means "little christ".... we like it, so it stuck.
Greek, the word christos, means Jesus which connects to Christianity, so its originally a Greek word. (I know this cos im Greek -_-)
They got the name from Jesus Christ because they view him as god.
