I have been pondering this for a while now and attempting to debate it. I cannot seem to figure out whether it is a religion or not. I mean I can't even seem to define religion properly. There are various definitions on the web, yet I feel that certain religions do not form part of those definitions. Also atheism is the belief that no deity exists, surely a belief in something constitutes a religion or at least a belief?
It's a belief, not a religion, I'd call religion a lifestyle really... You and I both know that atheism, the word itself, shouldn't exist in the first place, all it does is give the religious folks some large mass to point to and shun. I can't really see how it would fit as a religion... All it consists of is not believing in a diety, nothing else, don't have to go to mass on sunday, no fancy clothes to wear, that's it... Just my 2 cents here...
Atheism is definitely a belief, but to me, a religion needs to constitute a practice or ritual of some sort. For example, Buddhism is an atheistic religion, but what makes it a religion is the fundamentals and practices that bind one Buddhist to another. Without having religious ritual, there is no actual religion....does that make sense?
I agree with Miguel and Colleen. It's a belief. If you are atheist, that means you do not have a religion (don't believe in any religion), and don't believe in any higher god. Right? So if you don't have a religion and don't believe in that, then how can atheist be a religion.
Atheist defines what you aren't rather than what you are. Neither theism nor atheism are religions.
It definitely isn't a religion and the existence of god(s) is just part of our worldview.
As I hear from time to time, If atheism is a religion than health is a disease.
Do you believe in invisible pink unicorns? Not believing in IPU's much be a religion because you believe they don't exist. I guess not believing in the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny and Santa are religions as well.
All atheism says is no belief in a higher being or divine power. So you could call buddhists athiests because they don't believe in a god, but buddhism is most certainly a religion.

No, it's the lack of 'divine' or 'religious' belief, usually atheist follow the theories of science, particularly the big bang theory when it comes to the origins of the universe.
Because you believe in something. And that is what I am struggling with.
Athiest do not believe in anything. They do not have a religion.
Atheists can believe in all kinds of things, just not god.
Nooo. I think it's more of a way of thinking.
