I think in most places they are illegal to raise or have. You might check with your state’s fish and game department or animal control to see if it’s legal to have one with or without a permit.

The couple that I have seen were well mannered and didn’t seem to pose any threat, but I think the public is just naturally scared of them because of all the “dog” problems that have been experienced throughout the nation.
