Popping your knuckles is really a misleading statement and what you hear is not actually what causes problems. Between the joints of the fingers and knees there is a fluid that provides a cushion for the joints so the bones of the joint don’t rub together. It is called synovial fluid, and the sound you hear that everyone refers to as the knuckles popping, is actually bubbles in the fluid popping–it is not the actual knuckle at all. So, technically that is not bad for u. The damaging part is the excessive wear and tear on the joints (the knuckles) that constant bending and straightening that can potentially lead to arthritis. Arthritis is caused by the constant and overuse of the joints. So “popping your knuckles” puts extra wear and tear on those joints that normally wouldn’t see that excessive use. So, now I am developing arthritis in both of my hands at a relatively young age and it is progressing quickly. Is it due to popping my knuckles? No one really knows about those joints, but the excessive use of the thumb and fingers in general causes the arthritis in these areas. So, just in case–u might want to try and stop now so you don’t end up like me! (=

Answer #9

I didn’t say it definitely leads to arthritis, I said its not known. What IS known is arthritis is caused by the overuse of the joints involved–thats why arthritis is commonly found in the hands/fingers, and knees. And as you stated, the constant over pushing of the joints flexible range can’t be good–so, who knows if arthritis in my fingers is caused by the over pushing of the joint or the normal wear and tear on the joints from using the fingers every day. you basically just repeated what I said, lol. Although there may be no scientific evidence that knuckle cracking leads to arthritis–there is also no scientific evidence disproving it either. And pls cite your sources for your info from now on. K? Thxs! (=
