is it better to have a socialist type of government or capitalist?
If you had to choose between the two, capitalism is better. The reason is, that there is no incentive to work hard or well under socialism. If you use threats to make workers productive (which is what happens in socialist states), they'll do just the minimum required to not get punished, put the least effort into it, and will sabotage given the opportunity. The system eventually collapses.
Capitalism on the other hand, provides incentive to innovate and to work hard, which results in prosperity even for the poor.
That said, it's possible to have a capitalist system, with some degree of socialism for safety nets or specific programs that benefit all (education, healthcare).
They're political polar opposites... arguably...
You can't really say one is better than the other, since they both have benefits and drawbacks...
Capitalism: freedom and individual success and rights, celebrated - Socialism: Government will own and determine.
Think of it this way...
[Socialism + Capitalism = Democracy]
...arguably.

...a mixture of the two...
