well, i am assuming you mean an epidural, for labor. I am a strong advocate for epidurals, there's no reason for a woman to suffer through childbirth anymore. as with any procedure, there are risks. since it goes into your spinal cord, you could get a headache after it's taken out due to a leak. if that happens, the doctor goes in and puts a patch on it (a home remedy I give to my patients is a large glass of iced tea. the caffeine and the cold water seem to help). I've never seen ANY effects on a baby. the effect is on your own spine and never enters the bloodstream. in very VERY rare instances the spinal cord can be damaged. In 15 years of being a nurse I've never seen that happen nor heard of it happening. another reason for an epidural is in case of an emergency. Things can happen during birth that can be horrifically painful, and if an emergency c-section is needed to save the baby's life, taking time to insert an epidural can be fatal.
natural childbirth is a thing of the past.
Yep, that's right! Wasn't sure if you were talking about epidermis or epidural. :-)
Do you mean an epidural, as in the anesthesia?
