Are low protein diets safe?
I've been placed on a low protein, vegetarian, diet for the past 3 years. I have chronic kidney stone disease, and my protein limit a day doesn't pass 45 grams.
I'm just wondering if this sort-of diet is safe? I've been to dietitians and my doctors don't seem to mind... I just don't like it, it seems to keep me skinny and I don't have much muscle mass or much strength to do anything.
..and WHO was it that placed you on a low-protein diet? A qualified medical person? And why? If I were you, I'd get a second opinion.
Your body doesn't need vast amounts of protein (and not animal protein either - vegetarians can manage fine, as I've bveen doing for over 30 years) - but you do need to get enough, as well as enough vitamins and minerals. (Especially iron, if you're feeling weak.).
Low protein diets are often prescribed for people with kidney disease.
45gm of protein is not particularly low; in fact it is probably more than your body strictly needs. If your energy is low you should talk to your doctor to determine the cause.
