Because they are hoping it will get them out of trouble. If people are feeling sorry for them, they will over look that they were lying.

They are not the victim, but they are incorrigible liars so they portray themselves as the victim rather than tell the truth.

It’s called an escape method. Instead of allowing themselves to be torn apart now that the truth has been revealed, the instinct is to protect themselves and attack someone else instead, or to place the blame on someone else.
