In some villages, this happens every year, so it’s not all that unusual. In one case in 2003, a girl was married to a stray dog. The reasons vary slightly from place to place, but most ceremonies are meant to bestow good luck, to keep disease at bay, or to drive off evil spirits (as in the case of the dog). The girls lead perfectly normal lives afterward, are allowed to marry men later, and the frogs are always simply turned loose into the pond in which they were found.

It might seem a little bizarre, but then, most religious ceremonies are weird when you get down to it. Sprinkling water on a baby to make sure it gets into heaven when it dies? Weird. Drinking God’s blood? Weird.
