How do you express being a vegetarian amongst meat eater?

Well I’m a vegetarian and it seems like every time that it pops up in conversation my friends don’t understand. I’m tired of hearing “omg how do you do it, I can’t live without meat” or “yeah I get why you do it but I could never, I’m sorry but animals are supposed to be eaten” or worse “ you need protein to live”. Its frustrating because it lets me down, not because they’re not vegetarian but because they think that what I do is wrong or stupid. Then they get defensive by trying to back up their way of life. It’s so annoying…I’m not trying to change anybody but their just so rude. I think its them who need to learn how to deal with someone different and not me! I don’t know, let me know what you think, I won’t judge:)

thanks that really helped_ saying “ that it’s not a choice - it’s how you see the world” is a great answer, I love that!

sweetie - get used to it! I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly five years now and my mom still gives me crap about not eating meat (and she’s hindu ! - they’re supposed to be vegetarian. ) Know that you are doing a great thing by saving animals lives - and that it’s not a choice - it’s how you see the world.

When it comes to your friends - the best way to handle it is to treat it like it’s no big deal - and say that. If they say “how do you do it, I can’t live without meat or yeah I get why you do it but I could never,” just say “no big deal” and change the subject like, “who’s getting fries with me??” being vegetarian is really no big deal - it’s all in how you handle it.

I had a similar situation with alcohol.

I don’t like to drink alcohol. It’s nothing religious nor morale nor a matter of principle. I just do not like the feeling of loosing control. It gives me the creeps.

People kept telling me that drinking a lot of alcohol is great. They just kept bugging me about it. It was really annoying. I can have fun at a party, I can dance and I can laugh and I don’t want to and don’t need to be drunk to do that.

When I left high-school and started meeting new people at my job ad at university, I hoped that it would get better. But it didn’t. People still bugged me. So I invented a disease. I told people that I had a slight metabolic dysfunction in my liver but that it would get worse if I drank alcohol. After that, people said “Oh, sorry, I didn’t know. How terrible!” and stopped getting on my nerve. I know it’s not nice, because I’m telling a lie. But then, its also not nice of them to keep pushing.

I will clarify this in one sentence: “People live by the norms”

If anyone, steps out of the norms it’s social suicide because they are the “so called” rules everyone is “supposed” to live by. I still have people try to debate with me on my way of life and I simply state, “I do not wish to talk about it, it is a touchy subject” and that usually ends the conversation. However, you will come across the occasional debater who will not live it down… in that case I just ignore them and re-evaluate my friends. Friends are supposed to stick by you for everything.

hahaha, “its not a choice, its how you see the world,” makes perfect sense to me! and I’m not a vegetarian! well I don’t eat pork anymore because I know how smart pigs are and I just die to think about them being killed, I don’t understand why I’m only that way with pigs but maybe it’s a progressive thing because that’s just something I started recently, and my dad hunts dear which also kills me but thankfully he’s not very good so no killing this year! =)

but as for you’re question there’s no way to make people stop other than to change the subject and hope that they understand. sorry but it’s the way things are with anything that makes you different, I was a self harmer until people’s words got to me so much I stopped! and that’s such an oxymoron hahaha
