How They Form:
Warm moist winds from the south pass over the cooler air from the north. The differences in wind speed and direction create a tube of spinning winds called a vortex. Rising air within the thunderstorm forces the vortex to tilt and stand on its end. As the vortex meets the ground, friction causes the wind to spin tighter, creating a tunnel that sweeps up everything in its path.
