Known by many names around the world. Lent is basically the time of the year that the catholic/christian church commemorates the last 40 days of Jesus Christ.

it has been a trend to people to give up or sacrifice something (which they love doing, etc.) as a form of respect.

Lent is the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. It symbolizes the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert fasting. Because Jesus fasted, we fast.
