Why was the Gateshead Millennium Bridge built?

Answer #1

Well it was built so that people could cross the River Tyne as I remember. I think the idea of its design was to attract tourists, and not obstruct the view of other bridges / landmarks. The bridge is also fairly quick in adjusting to allow ships to travel underneath, using an advanced hydraulic-tilt mechanism.
