Is it a form of offense or rudeness to call someone a "dude"?

I think the Americans use the terminology a lot. Wouldn’t think it is offensive, but damn annoying if someone keep calling me a ‘dude”, I would need to left my dress up and show them I’m a “dudette” just to shut their traps up. :-P

I understand. But sometimes if I call a friend dude, as in, “ your so funny dude or please pass the plate dude, they get offended while some of my other friends don’t and laugh it off saying things like “yeah okay DUDE”, just make fun of the fact that I used the word. Lol it’s got me confused.

i dont like being addressed as one, to be honest i never have in real life but i do all the time on the internet.

ive just had a look in the dictionary and it looks like the word dude is summet to do with fool..

so when mr. t says yo fool is he really saying yo dude?
