What is the difference between the coloration of DAPPLE and MERLE?

so can some please tell me the difference in the 2 colorations?

Merle is a solid base color (usually red/brown or black) with lighter blue/gray or reddish patches, which gives a mottled or uneven speckled effect.

Dapple is basically when a black base coat is diluted i.e. becomes lighter and this can also result in spots.

Oh and I forgot to mention. I’ve heard people say they are the same, but my understanding is that they are not.
