Can a computer overheat without getting hot?

I know it doesn’t make much sense but my computer never gets that hot but it always gets really loud and sounds like the fan is blowing trying to cool it off. Whenever it happens the computer really slows down. So any ideas?

While your computer might not seem externally warm the temperature that matters is the temperature of the CPU itself. Many computers now have variable speed fans that run just fast enough to keep the temperature in the safe zone so when your fan is running full speed your CPU is near or past its safety zone. The most common reason overheating computers slow down or hang is because components malfunction and error. Some CPUs actually throttle down their clock speed when they are in danger of thermal damage.
