I have used both. They are basically the same when it comes to quality and ease of handling. You can’t go wrong with either.

Im gonna say Canon just because everyone else seems to like it over Nikon and it is more popularly used in society, and there is probably a good reason for that.

People have been arguing this since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Back in the film era I owned both. I shot with a Canon FTb for years then later a Nikon FM2n. Loved both cameras. For compact cameras Canon Elphsare hard to beat; I’ve owned 3 Elphs (first one was 2MP) and they were all great. If you are looking for a serious digital camera now I’d look at the Sony NEX and Panasonic Lumix G lines.
