Answer #1

Did Jesus right the Bible? Strictly speaking, no. Most of the books were written befor Jesus of Nazareth was born.

The only thing that Jesus is ever purported to have written are a few unkown words in the dirt when the Pharisees were asking him whether or not to stone a woman caught in adultery.

However, the Church throughout the centuries asserts that all of the books currently contained in the cannon (73 in total) were written under in the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Second Vatican Council proclaimed that all the books with all their parts were inspired (see “Dei Verbum” the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_const_19651118_dei-verbum_en.html).

Furthermore, the council teaches that each book had a human author, and the books are to be interpereted based on what the author intended to mean. For instance, if the author was writing poetry or prophesy, then the book is not meant to be taken literally.

As far as the dates are concerned, Carbon dating of the dead sea scrolls has revealed that the oldest New Testament texts available were written on paper from the 1st century. Several BIblical scholars have postulated based on the syntax and translation of those early texts that they were originally penned as early as 45AD. (To see exactly which scholars those are and their reasons for their opinions see “What Catholics Really Believe” by Karl Keating.)

The canon of scripture as it stands now was actually not formulated at the council of Nicea. It was established over several centuries, most notably at the Councils of Hippo and Carthage which took place in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Even those councils did not authorize a written book as we know the Bible today. Remember that most people did not know how to read until late in the second millenium. They decided which books could be read from during the Liturgy (Mass).

No Church council ever declared “these books are in and no more” until the council of Florence declared the New Testament Canon in the 15th century and the Council of Trent declared the Old Testament in the 16th century.

Answer #2

No, Jesus didn’t write the Bible.

The Protestant Bible contains 66 books contained in the Old Testament and the New Testament. These records are believed to be reliable records inspired by God.

So the bible is written by the apostles of Jesus Christ, all in different times. God speaks through the inspired writers to write these documents/scriptures.

Here is the Old Testament [Protestant tradition.]

Pentatuech: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 &2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles. Ezra - Nehmiah, and Esther.

Wisdom Texts: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon.

Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah - Lamentations.

Apocalyptic Prophets: Ezekiel, Daniel.

Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.

If you want to learn more about the credibility of the Bible, Funmail me, and I’ll be glad to share my knowledge of Jesus Christ :]

Answer #3

It was written by man and the books chosen to make up the bible were chosen by man.

No books in the bible were actually written by Jesus although some of the words are attributed to him.

Although some will say that the words and choice of books was man guided by god.

Answer #4

I took a New Testament course at an accredited conservative Southern Baptist College and we learned there that there was no real proof who wrote any of those books including the Gospels. It was immediately followed up with a statement like, “But we believe XX wrote the Book of YY because [insert some reason].”

Answer #5

No, Jesus did not write the Bible, nor did he write anything at all as far as we know. None of his disciples wrote it either, nor did they write anything else as far as we know Nor did anyone who claims to have known Jesus or his disciples contribute to the Bible.

Answer #6

The bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit, moving on the hearts of man. It was written thru the power of the spirit, and has to be interputed by the same spirit. Without the spirit of God… confusion reigns…

Answer #7

toadaly is wrong, the disciples did write some of the bible. Anyone who has taken college courses and at accredited college knows that.

Answer #8

But, kiasu, the question is a matter of historical fact, not theology. Even Christian scholars acknowledge that Jesus didn’t write the Bible, although they will claim that the writers were inspired by God.

Answer #9

No. The Bible was written over hundredsof years by many different people including Moses, Paul, Matthew, and John. God inspired these people to write about what he wanted the world to know, which means that everything in there should be.

Answer #10

I don’t think there is ANY PROOF that any of the diciples wrote any of the bible but christians beleve that they did contribute.

Answer #11

Sorry, katydid, but I’m not wrong.

The Gospels are anonymous works, attributed to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the late 2nd century. Paul admits to never knowing Jesus and claims his knowledge was derived not from men, but from the Jewish scriptures and a heavenly vision. The author of Acts admits that his knowledge was ‘handed down’ to him. The author of Acts is the same author of Luke.

The remaining works in the NT are even later than Paul and the Gospels.

Anyone who has studied ancient Christian history knows these facts, and they are easily verified. I don’t know what kind of college courses you took that tought you Christian propoganda as history, but you should demand a refund.

Answer #12

Just a point of contention with drumdiva11. Moses was not one of the authors of the books of the Bible. Traditionally, he was thought to have put the Torah (first five books) into writing. But this would be highly unlikely given that Deutoronomy records Moses’ death, and that the oldest parts of the Torah are dated to 950 BC, long after Moses was thought to have lived. The author(s) of the Torah is a historical mystery, although the Torah’s writing style, in Hebrew-Aramaic, is very different from the rest of the Old Testament.

Answer #13

If Jesus wrote the bible there would be a “book of Jesus”. Oddly (very oddly) this book is missing from this “holy text”. Also missing are books from Mary and Joseph - surely his parents had something to say about the matter?

The bible is a collection of different books collated into its roughly it’s current form by the Council of Nicea, who actually VOTED on the holiness of each book before allowing them. From that time is has undergone many alterations and translations. Most believers will say that the message remains, but I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Answer #14

Peter and John, who are the two disciple/writers I can think of off the top of my head, write in a style very consistent with their characters in the Gospels - Peter very forthright and clear, and John very mystical. They also seem to have knowledge relevant to their own experiences with Jesus. So I’ve always felt those two attributions as writers in the Bible were perfectly credible.

Answer #15

Nope. diciples and biblical characters wrote the bible, like the examples drumdiva11 wrote above. Usually whatever the book is named in the bible, the person or group of people wrote it and God did insipire them to write it, so that Christians have a book to learn about what God wants humans to do, and look back on the bible so when we don’t know what to do when we have a problem, we read what God wants us to do.

Answer #16

no lol he wasnt alive that long on earth silly,,, a bunch of authors rote it who were annointed by god

Answer #17

I think this question revolves totally around faith and christian belief. It is a theological issue.
