American Bulldog Female - pregnant or no?

I have a 1 1/2 year old femal American Bulldog. She tied with our male mix and we put ice on both of them and the untied after about a minute or two of my finding them. Her nipples have become larger and she’s sleeping a lot - lying around like a dead dog and just snoring away the day. ;] The spay abort has been suggested to me, but I didn’t even want to go there. She was bred on July 15th, but her appetite hasn’t decreased - if anything it’s gotten bigger. If she is pregnant - does she need veterinary care to keep her and the puppies healthy? Her nipples have gotten bigger and I’m not sure if she’s pregnant or is it just a phantom?

Oh this is too soon to know anything

Many dogs with the barrel chest such as yours will carry the pups in their chest well into the pregnancy. Up under the rib cage.

A Vet or a breeder can tell at about 27 days. He does this by standing the dog up and placing a hand on either side of the lower abdomen. The uterus of a dog is shaped like a why with a horn on each side that the puppies are in. The puppies are carried in the horns. By pressing with your fingers you may feel several small lumps, which are the puppies growing in the uterus. From 30 to 35 days the uterus fills with fluid and you may not be able to feel the puppies. Of course the closer you get to 63-65 days you will know you have puppies coming.

Just because you caught this tie is there any other time they may have gotten together? Also dogs can tie and the timing not be right and if you are lucky you will not have puppies.

No milk coming out. =] She only weighs about 55 some odd pounds - so if she starts gaining weight - I’ll know a bit more becuase she’s never been over 55/60 pounds.

magi - she tied with an Aussie Shepherd/Blue Heeler

I’ll contact the vet’s ASAP and see. It’ll be around the 10th of next month. I have it labeled in my phone, so yup

The way to tell if it is a phantom pregnancy is to gently squueze her nipples and if she has milk then that is a sign of a phantom. Otherwise I would take her to the vet and have her checked. Larger nipples is a sign but it is a bit difficult to tell more until about the 5th week.

If she was at the 20th day of her heat and you are sure what you know about a dog’s heat, she is not pregnant. But without the proper test etc, it is hard to know exactly what day she was at in her cycle. Mother Nature being what it is nothing is for sure.

I would take her to your Vet at what you would guess to be the 27 day after the tie.

I would also consult with you Vet about her pregnancy because of the intestinal problem (but if it was corrected it is most likely not a problem)

Good luck. What kind of dog did she tie with?

Answer #5

No - after that one time we kept a close eye on them. She was at about the 20th day of her cycle. Other than her nipples getting big and being sleepy - there’s not any other signs, yet. I’ll have to see how much a visit to the vet’ll be. We could always add it to our little tab-like thing. She had to have surgery at about six months because she had her intestines all tied up.

Thanks to both of you. I’ll contact the vet tomorrow!
