Why does religion cause problems

There are many historical conflicts caused by religion. What ever happened to "thou shall not kill"?

I believe the "thou shalt not kill" only applies to other believers, those who are unbelievers have historically been fair game for the sword, and therein lies the problem- organized religion has viewed those who do not believe as a threat to their beliefs- and so to bring people into line, and to convert, they can just point out what has happened to those who refused to make the transition.
it strikes me as odd that the puritan religion ( as well as other organized religions) have developed quite barbaric and sadistic punishment devices to force people to repent. the inquisition and the witch trials were utterly inhumane and torturous- all in the name of a god.
and that "force" to get converts is what has created the problems, because those who will not convert have usually been prepared to fight and die to preserve their beliefs- remove the force, and the problems would not have happened.

uhm seriously? people are selfish by nature... thou shalt not kill is applicable to general society rules, except when you want oil, or revenge, or whatever (just ask Bush...)

It doesn't count as killin' if you're just sendin' 'em back to god.

I agree with ty also...
Many parts of the bible are only followed when they agree with someone's dogma.
Just as many parts are forgotten if they don't agree with someone's dogma.

The bible seems to be used to support whatever side you are on...

The irony of it all...

Thou shalt not kill

Ever read through the bible and see how many people God and Jesus Christ condemned to death for punishment?

Because God supposedly told them too, God advocates killing followers of other gods. God also thinks it's okay to kill what he considers "rebellious people" which includes children. Well Gee if he's so "powerful" why doesn't he do it himself? God thinks like ancient humans to no suprise.

***there are many historical conflicts caused by religion. What ever happened to 'Thou shall not kill'?***

...you say 'religion' ...but 'Thou shalt not kill' is a commandment found in the Torah/Old Testament, so it only partains to Judaism and Christianity.

And with that in mind, the 'kill/don't kill' issue is but one of countless contradictions found in both religions.

I think that human nature causes problems, and that religion is a great excuse for human nature to show its tribalistic, vicious side. Other good excuses include extreme nationalism, greed, fear, soccer (I'm not kidding) and jealousy. I don't believe that Jesus condemned anyone to death (He mentioned Hell, but no condemnation to death, I believe). Most other religions are also reasonably peaceful when interpreted by the peaceful! But if the violent get their hands on them they use them as an excuse to do what they always wanted anyway.

I would include 'bad parenting' into that equation also.

It seems as though ..God is just and when he commands death, it is not murder. Gods commandment is "you shall not murder", which is killing for an unjust reason, anything outside what he commands.

...so... has God commanded you to kill anyone lately? The idea of an 'all-powerful' deity, who won't even man-up and do his own dirty work, makes this deity seem kinda... wimpy... or lazy... or not even real... or all three.

I'd consider that a sign of delusional disorder. Although If you flip through the Bible you'll find disturbing passages of who God wants killed.

The bottom line of the bible, is whether or not, one actually does what it says.

It does not say to kill.

It says to not kill... but, to love.

Jesus said, IF>... you love me, you will obey my commandments.

...it says don't murder.

Hmmm... Its kind of strange that ''rape'' is not an issue.

its not religion thats causing the conflict its the devil that throws the conflicts . I see one that dont believe finally admitted there is a God . Thank you , Its some that take the bible too literal you have to really study and look into things the bible says . what is thou shalt not kill ??? the question or is it the confussion you have on religion ??? Then ask yourself why do people not believe ??? or why people steal , why do they cheat on people , why do kids disobey their parents ??? why do they put other god before God himself ??? what is it you really want to know ???

The Bible is found to be so absurd, that it's taught that Jesus came to change God's law. That's not even Biblical. He was there to add to it. It is also taught that all you have to do is accept Jesus to enter Heaven. Early Christians believed you had to be a moral person, aswell as believe. It seems as though many Christians don't read the Bible, or choose how to interpret it. As to the way they ridicule Allah and the Q'uarn, if they read the Bible they would see it is nearly as bad.

In some parts of the Bible it seems as though God condones rape, although in other parts, both the victim and the rapist "shall be stoned to death"(unless it's in "open country".
