Why do people believe the bible?

Asked by fau about 1 month ago, 37 answers.

I'm not all in the religious stuff, to tell you the truth I don't have religious beliefs. I just have a couple of questions that I don't understand.

Why do people believe the bible so much?
Why do some people base their life on this book?
Do they...

believe in life outside the bible and the possibility that god *may not* even exist or is that out of question?

"because the Bible is true and nothing but the truth "

That is the one scentence that bugs me more than anything.
Truth:
Noun
1. the quality of being true, genuine, or factual
2. something that is true
3. a proven or verified fact, principle, etc

How can you say it is Truth, when it's something that can not be proved. Religion is based on faith, correct?

Faith
Noun
1. strong belief in something, ***esp. without proof ***
2. a specific system of religious beliefs
3. complete confidence or trust, such as in a person or remedy
4. allegiance to a person or cause

Those are two tottally different things. I am fine with you saying you have faith in the bible an faith in your religion, but to call it truth, is absurd.

Most Christians believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, written down by humans for the purpose of delivering God's message to the rest of humanity.

People base their lives on it because they believe it to contain moral and ethical guidelines coming directly from God.

Most people who regard the Bible as a holy book certainly believe in God. There are some Christian denominations who do not believe the Bible is the *only* word of God, Quakers and Mennonites are a couple such groups.

You should know that most Christians today know little if anything about how the modern Bible was assembled or the cultural and literary contexts in which it was written, not to mention how it has been translated into various languages throughout time.

people believe in the bible because they believe in god and all the other people who are in it. no one has to be religious. either they choose to or there parents make them.

because God spoke through the Holy Spirit to those who wrote it so therefor it is the truth. I am a Christian and im not afraid to admitt it. knowing God as your personal savior is a fantastic choice. a choice you should not only consider making but hopefully you will make it.

...it's hard to tell the difference between the answers actual Christians give to this question, and a parody answer.

That's what I'm getting at - like a book isn't enough proof for me personally to believe in something and I don't understand how people can depend on this. That's what I'm confused about, like is there something I'm missing?

I agree with you on that.
The book was written by man, not by the hand of God. It is said that God was supposed to inspire them in what the wrote. How do we know that it is exactly Gods word? How do we know that they didnt throw some of their own stuff in there? How do you even know God said that the bible should be written?
It's impossible to know these things. That's the difference between faith and fact. That's what I was saying in my last post. You can't say that it's fact without proof. There is no SOLID proof. I think it's great if people have their faith, just dont tell me it's the absolute truth.

Exactly!
Gosh, I don't get it. I don't believe its possible to prove this either because there is no definite proof, that's why I don't understand all these people. I don't have a problem with people having faith either but I don't understand what is making them believe.

Every person has a different level of faith. I personally dont see the point in having faith in something that I have no proof of. To me it's as silly as believing in santa and the easter bunny. Although some people live their whole lives, blindly almost. They need their faith to hold them together. They need something there to keep their life sane. They need faith to know what's right and wrong. They need faith to go on living when someone dies. To me faith, is for weak people. People who can't handle the real world. People who need a reason for when bad things happen. They can't accept life and death.
In My Opinion.

-Well for one, this "book" has been around for such a long, long time.
-Everyone always says theres, no proof. Theres lots of proof. If you havnt "found" the "proof," yet...Have fun looking for the "proof." Because you will never prove God doesnt exist.
-If you seek you will find. I dare you to.

You dont have to prove that something does not exist, that makes no sense.
You do however need to prove something that people think exist. Such as God. Like I've said a million times, it can't be done, and that's why it's called faith. Faith and Truth are two very different things.
You can have faith in god, but you can't prove that he's there.

"this book has been around for such a long long time" -
1. The book as you know has not been around as long as you think it has, the originals are long lost and no one knows what was lost in translation
2. So in 5000 Harry Potter will be true because it will be 5000 years old? How does age make something authentic? The belief that the earth was flat has been around for millenia... didnt make it true...

Lol, the bible is sooo not true!
If you read it and acutally understand what the people in the bible are saying, it can all be explained today with science, and pretty much common sence!
an example would be, you know the famous painting of the one guy, who went on a spiret indian thing for three days and eventually the angel joseph came to him and tould him what to write on the gold pages?
Yeah, thats what people these days like to call an houlsition,
going out into the wood with no food, water, and drugs?
Kind of basic knowlage these day..

lmao, haniah, the bible is nothing but man made stories sweety.
It's simple brainwashing really. They're taught that form a young age & nothing else, & are told NOT to question what they believe in so don't. You see children recieting things from the bible not grasping what it means. Sad, aye?

okayy well people believe in the bible because it says the truth
&& we were made from god

&& jesus crist died for our sins in the cross
&& if it wasn't

for him we wouldn't be here && because without god were
nothing

how do you think people
came in life if it wasn';t for him?

how were we created well we were created from the hands
of god he made us

from dust and his breath brought us alive
it';s all truee

&& look at it this way it's better to believe then not
bc if you believe

&& it's true you don't lose nothing right :]] okayy && it's
not true

again you don't lose nothing either
but then if it was true and people didn't believe they would go to soemthing
called ((hell))

so if you believe and it's real or not you don't lose nothing
but if you don;t

believe and it's real you lose
everything like heavenn you see and

even tro if you don't believe in god he created you and would always love
you no matter

what his always there for u

&& you might say you can't live with out your best friends
will his

your bestfriend you can talk to him && he won;t tell anyone but a best friend
can but not himm

&& he know's you and he has a story for u
&& he made u

&& he is always with you in every step you take && never leave;s
you remember that && again

satann, trys to fight and take people away
from

god bc satan isn';t powerful enough to take god and kill him and god
has enough powers

to kill satan but he won';t because he wasn;t
people to

see the lie's and what satan has done that made us have death
&& everything && only god is

perfect! ;:[]

hope thiss changed your mind write me back && tell me what u

***I believe in the Bible, because the Bible is true***

Ever wonder why they don't keep it in the 'non-fiction' section at the bookstore?

***-Well for one, this "book" has been around for such a long, long time.
-Everyone always says theres, no proof. Theres lots of proof.***

You're confusing PROOF, with EVIDENCE that supports your beliefs. Get it right.

***Have fun looking for the "proof." Because you will never prove God doesnt exist.***

...just as you will never prove he DOES.

You aren't helping your position by using incorrect terminology, and double-edged arguments. You aren't much of a free-thinker, huh?

For those claiming the bible is inerrant (completely accurate): Which one? There are many translations, and many versions in the original hebrew, and they all contradict each other. Some of the oldest known manuscripts don't contain certain well known parts of the modern bible, say different things in other places, and include sections that aren't in modern bibles.
