It depends. They say people who smoke are smaller because they are preoccupied with smoking instead of eating. I do know many obese people who smoke and eat at the same time so it really is how much you eat that makes you fat. Cigarettes make you crave tobacco instead of food but the effects are bad lungs, bad skin, and expensive. I know when you quit smoking most people gain weight because they want to put something in their mouth and usually it is food to replace the cigarette.

I dont think effects you weight when you are actually smoking that much. It might make you eat slightly less, because you are smoking so often, so when you want that hand to mouth fixation instead of food you grab a smoke..
I do know that a lot of people tend to gain when when they quit..But id rather be a little chubby then have black lungs and cancer.

Cigarette smoking increases a person's metabolic rate in part by forcing the heart to beat faster. When a cigarette is inhaled, the smoker's heart may beat 10 to 20 times more per minute for a period of time. This causes extra stress on the heart and plays a role in heart disease, the most common cause of smoking-related death.
Think about this: A smoking habit of 20 cigarettes a day puts approximately the same amount of stress on the heart as 90 pounds of extra weight would. When we stop smoking, heart rate slows down somewhat, causing metabolism to dip a bit as well. This can in turn trigger a slight weight gain.
So in turn, smoking really makes you lose weight if you have that kind of addiction. When you quit smoking, your metabolism is not used to the little amount of stress on your heart, so you can gain a little weight. Studies show that after 7 years of not smoking, the metabolism gets back to the way it was before the smoker started smoking, due to the consistent diet.
