How can I get rid of carpenter ants without chemicals?

What is the best way to get rid of Carpenter Ants without using harmful chemicals or paying an exterminator?

I've heard of a few things during my research online for you:

1. Mint. Fresh mint placed around the home should repel them.
2. Plain old vinegar mixed with garlic powder and sprayed (although this probably stinks!)
3. Powdered borax and caster sugar mixed in equal portions and used as bait
