Why do you want to get rid of the ants? Are they eating your plants? Usually ants are beneficial to the garden because they eat aphids.

If you really think they're doing damage, you can also sprinkle cornmeal around the plant. They eat it and it explands inside them.

Plant some lavender near your tomato plants, the ants don't like the lavander and it naturally repels them. And who doesn't want lavander in their garden! It's great for heaps of things. If you don't want to put the lavander in the soil in your vegie patch, get a couple of lavender plants, pot them and then just place them as you want them!
