Xanax Addiction

I was previously addicted to Xanax and a few other things and went through rehab and now my doctor has put me on 5 mg of xanax 3 times a day.

I’m going to be straight up and say I dont think I’ll be able to just take the prescribed ammount. It’s kinda like giving an alcoholic in recovery a bottle of vodka and saying oh take a sip a few times a day.

I have panic attacks often, but I believe Xanax isn’t the way, I want it but I dont know if it’s a good idea.

should I take the pills or not?

Answer #1

it’s funny, I’ll always remember that date. but yes I will talk to my doctor, and if all else fails I will give them to my neighbor and have them ration them out to me. for me whenever I’m within the vicinity of anything of the such my heart starts racing and I go into “addict” mode. thank you very much though, you’ve helped a lot =]

Answer #2

no I mean I had been addicted in the past, I haven’t been on Xanax in over a year. and now I’m prescribed it

Answer #3

There is no such thing as “had been” addicted. Once you are an addict - you always are. You don’t “get over” addiction, you learn how to cope with them. Have you tried going to counseling or NA or AA meetings?

Answer #4

Good for you! I would talk to your doctor though and see if there is something else you can get on. If not - give them to someone you trust - and let them give you the pills only when you are supposed to take them. When your an addict - it’s very hard to be around the things you are addicted too.

Answer #5

Yes I go to NA meetings on a regular basis. and yes I’m aware once your hooked you always are I just meant I’ve been clean since dec 10th 07

Answer #6

Go to your doctor. I’m pretty sure there are other options. It’s stupid to take something you were hooked on. Addictive personalities… Make sure you dont start abusing whatever else he gives you

Answer #7

Did you tell your doctor about your addiction? You should really talk to him and see if there is something else he could prescribe you.

If that is the only medicine though - I’ll give you some tips on how to get through this. I’ma recovering drug addict myself (meth, acid, xtc, pain pills, etc). I was scared to take pain pills after my son was born, but I was in tremendous pain. What I did was gave the pills to my fiance to hold for me. He monitered me, only gave me them when I needed them, and hid them from me.

Answer #8

You really should follow the doctor’s orders..he’s obviously trying to wean you down as opposed to taking you off cold turkey.

Getting over an addiction is a difficult thing to do, but the only person who can make it happen is you - you need to be your own judge here and decide what’s best for you, throwing need out and building up willpower.

Make sure your doctor knows your concerns.
