U.S. Record Men: (as of 8/05) CONCACAF GOLD CUP W 30 L 4 T 4 FIFA CONFEDERATED CUP 1999 3RD FIFA FUSTAL 1989 3RD 1992 2ND FIFA WORLD RATED 6TH out of 20 COUNTRIES INTERNATIONAL WORLD CUP W 6 L 14 T 2 OLYMPIC W 5 L 14 T 9 PAN AM WORLD W 19

A relatively new sport to America, results don’t appear TERRIBLE to me - I would consider TERRIBLE (especially shouting in capital letters) as never winning.

Answer #2

Answer #3

football=football and soccer=soccer, and also its different in all countries, we all dont speak the same type of language, we dont call football soccer, we call soccer soccer and football football, and not to be rude, I dont care for soccer anyways but anyhow, like I said, just b/c you call it one thing in your country or your background doesn mean people wit other backgrounds and countries call it the same thing

Answer #7

Let’s get it straight. The USA are actually really high in the FIFA world rankings making them pretty good at the sport. By the way, rugby and american football are completely different apart from the fact that both sports suck.

Answer #8

It’s a fact…the US, historically speaking, has one of the worst world cup teams in, well, the world :)

And, for the record, I played soccer (aka football) for 13 years in total.

Answer #9

Defiance to the mother country? they call it rugby -we’ll call it football(close adaptation) they call it football-we’ll call it soccer (because its for suckers!) hehe

Answer #10

to danbob

only america calls ‘football’ soccer, rest fo the world calls it football because thats the original name!..not only the UK but rest of the europe and asia call it football, and I also agree with thedude. I think its just to cover up the bad talent, and I think its the same thing with rugby, they were bad at it so they change the name to american football and also change the concept so they could dominate that sport.

Answer #11

I think it’s because the Americans are TERRIBLE at the “real” football. So, they had to invent their own Football and by doing so, dominate in that sport.

Then by relegating the real football to “soccer” which is only played in the US (every other country plays football) they wouldn’t be the world’s worst at “soccer” either, because it’s only played here.

Linguistic funniness to cover up for a lack of talent, in my opinion.

Answer #12

because in french football is soccer so it just depends. I speak french so…

Answer #13

some people call soccer futbol not football. and most americans dont we call soccer soccer and football football

Answer #14

How come english people call soccer football? Football is a completely different game ;l

Answer #15

Well, I would like to point out something here. The UK (and most likely Ireland) are about the only countries I can think of that actually call the Soccer/Football sport Football. The rest of the world calls it Soccer - why is that? after all, it is a very old sport and originates in the UK, and long outdates any other kind of “Football”, be it American, Australian (both of which are different sports anyway) or Rugby, which is sometimes referred to as “Footie”. Even Brazil calls it Soccer.

So, when and why did the name change, and how come most of the rest of the world adopted the name Soccer instead of Football?

Answer #16

Soccer=Soccer Football=Football Soccer=Football=Tennis

Answer #17

TheDude, How rude!! lol :)

Answer #18

its because futbol not football… and I think soccer should be football and football should be soccer!

Answer #19

Being that American Football is FAR more common & a VERY popular sport in the US it would make sense not to abandon the term that Americans are used to associating with their sport.

Still, it remains true that the true owner of the word football is the one that US calls ‘soccer’ and if you search you’ll find more incongruencies b/w the US & the rest of the World

Answer #20

well, we already have a sport called Football. Go Cowboys!
