When can a kitten leave its mom and start eating regular food?

I want a kitten and my friends cat had kittens like five weeks ago so I was wondering when I could take the kitten away from its mom to my house cause my mom said 6 weeks but I wasnt sure and should the kittens be eating regular food too by now or just milk and would I need the kitten to be eating regular food by the time I can take it home or could it just start eating regular when I bring it to my house?

thanks for the answers!!

You need to wait at least 6 weeks (every week is VERY important), and 8 weeks is best. Although you dont see it, the mother is socializing them, and taking the cat away too early will make things harder (so the cat can either turn out very timid or very aggressive, and it is very hard to change this). I know you’re excited and really want the kitten, but have a little patience. You dont give cats milk. That apparently gives some of them diarrhea. There’s special kitten milk you can find in the pet store. There’s also kitten food. It generally is best if the cat starts being weaned off mom’s milk slowly, but if you get the kitten and it hasnt been weaned, well you can just start it off on kitten food. Sometimes you can soak the dry food in warm water. Wet food is obviously good (canned stuff). Oh, and you might try this to reduce the crying when you bring the kitty home, since you are friends with the cat owner, see if you cant take over like a little stuffed toy you can rub over the kitten and the mum so their smells rub off, and then you can bring it home with the kitten. Might help with the transition.

When it’s 6 - 8 weeks old.

Eight weeks is best. It would be great if your friend would start feeding them dry kitten food now. If they will not eat that, then soften the food with luke warm water. What we always did with our animals were to make them a friend. We would stuff old socks the size of the kitten or puppy. Tie a knot in the end. The entire litter sleeps, plays, and etc… with the socks. When each kitten leaves the litter send a stuffed sock with it. That kept a lot of people from having sleepless nights.

As far as mama cat is concerned, she likes them around for 3 or 4 months…however, the kitten can go at 6 to 8 weeks.
