Show me step by step for the following equation;
1 1/5 - 5/8 =?
I need information on how to substract mixed fractions and fractions.
Its been forever since I've done this haha ok im gunna try to put this in dummy terms the way I remember it. 1 1/5 is a mixed #. You want to change it into a fraction (mult whole number by the denomiator and add the numerator, giving you 6/5. so 6/5 - 5/8. To subtract fractions, you need to have the same # in the denominator. The best way to do this is finding the LCD, but if you dont know how to, then mult the denomiators together, giving the new denomiator:40. k, so after that, mult each numerator by the # the denomiator was just multiplied by. The problem should look like: 48/40 - 25/40. solve. ... ... ... ... .. . the answer is 23/40
and btw NEVER subtract the denominators!
1 1/5, if you convert it into an improper fraction is 6/5. then you have 6/5-5/8. you multiply the fractions so that the denominator is equal. try using the LCM for the denominator. =] in this case, the LCM is 40. So you'd multiply 6/5 times 8, and 5/8 times 5. then you end up with 48/40-25/40. you subtract the numerator like a regular subtraction problem. leave the denominator alone. then you get, 23/40. and that is your answer. =]
By the way Rabbq1 LCM is the same thing as LCD that is the Lowest Common Multiple is the same as the Least Common Denominator
