Why is it unhealthy to marry blood related?

Yes, the chromosomes are too close together and will cause major problems when it comes to having children and such. Brothers, Sisters, Cousins. Not only is it a bad thing in the eye of society, it’s also too closely related.

The 3rd cousins and step-siblings are a safer bet, but still a little weird. Look for somebody outside your bloodline, you’re better off not getting the googly eyes and stares when people ask “So, how did you meet?” “Oh, well, we’re 3rd cousins.” A little awkward.

The closest legal union is between cousins (first cousins). At this stage, it’s really more of a social taboo than a genetic issue.

I have two sets of cousins who married, and all their children are just fine.

If you marry your sister, and you both are heterozygous for some debilitating gene, your child would end up being homozygous for it and have three toes and two heads, LOL ;-)

Genetic defects or any other health problems in the family bloodline is more likely to transfer to the baby of related parents. So yes, this is why it is not a good idea. And, I can’t confirm this at the moment, but I remember something about Down Syndrome being common in children of related parents too.
