Would a police officer be able to do anything if he saw you snorting a prescription that is in your name?

Hypothetical question. My fiance was wondering about this and i have no clue. Since its prescribed to you i would think they would have no say in how you choose to take it….idk.

Answer #1

Yes, actually….by taking a medication that is not in the prescribed fashion, it counts as dr*g abuse.

Answer #2

Well…if it’s a pill and it says like “take with food” or something I’m pretty sure they would be able to do something because that’s not how you’re supposed to take it, and you’re sort of doing it to get high, not to get better from a sickness or something, right?

Answer #3

The police can “do something” whenever you do something they don’t like. They may not be able to convict you unless you are convicted by a jury of your peers of breaking a law they can always so something to you.

As far as any laws being broken by crushing and snorting a medication goes; crushing pills defeats their time release mechanism effectively making it into a different medication. Even if it isn’t a time release medication my understanding is that taking it in a different mode than prescribed is illegal though I do not know the exact law and statute. Taking an oral medication as an inhaled or injected drug or as a suppository usually increases the rate that it is absorbed; often dangerously.

Answer #4

Well dr.ug abuse isnt actually against the law. Otherwise alcoholism would be against the law. The laws would probably depend on where you live. What particular laws said about taking medications in different forms. People crush medications all the time, kids often have a hard time swallowing. They could arrest you saying that they believed it was an illegal substance you were taking. Whether you could be convicted is seriously doubtful.

Answer #5

It is not illegal to snort something prescribed to you but it increases the side effects. In rare cases it can be fatal. Snorting it will put the effects immediately to work and will not give your body enough time to react to it. Some pills have special coatings that affect how they are released in your body. Crushing it means interupted the complex process. Although its your say it could be very dangerous taking it not as prescribed. you dont want a horse pill to release everything into your body if it is to be a slow release.

Answer #6

oh and sorry an officer could do as he pleases but arrest you. he hasnt proof of illegal substance. although i bet they take you to the station for examination.
