Why do the police in my country not arrest these people selling fake DVDs?

Answer #1

Maybe its not illegal

Answer #2

Easy, no incentive. The police have better things to do…and, since it’s not the Indonesian film industry but Bollywood (India) and Hollywood (USA) that are really losing money on the whole deal…it’s probably net - net beneficial for the Indonesian economy to allow piracy, rather than put a stop to it.

Of course…that’s not the official line I’m sure, but the justification is probably close to that.

Answer #3

Every country that’s not an LDC has intellectual property laws…it’s one of those things that the UN enforces (I found this all out while living in a country that’s about to graduate from it’s LDC status into the middle teir). :)

Answer #4

It is illegal, still nothing is done to stop it. Should I bring out the issu to the press so that they will pay attention?

Answer #5

I understand and thx for clearing up on that

Answer #6

You can get 6 pieces of DVDs for 2 dollars. Some po r n films are there sold freely on the pavement, well not to be offered to under ages though. Still it is so annoying…

Answer #7

When I lived in Honduras it was the same thing, I do not think I could go to the stores there and buy a official legal copy of anything.

Answer #8

Same happens in my Country and the answer is there is simply not enough resources to deal with Pirates. You charge them today and they are back out tomorrow. They are on every corner and sometimes the police makes a raid on the streets and the next day they are back out. Maybe the fines needs to be raised but in the end the police is more concerned with acts of violence and other serious crimes. The other reason which is also to be noted is that mast times the same police which is expected to uphold the law is also customers. Think about it? We have to pay almost $200 (TT) for one original DVD and we can get 20 for that same price before it is even released on DVD. What would you do if you had bills to pay and $200 is 5% of your salary or your entire cable bill. Not saying it is right, just saying that it is the norm and by way of acceptance, considered to be harmless to buy or sell Pirates. Anybody living in the US would disagree but they have the DVD’s at the cheapest price without another Profit margin, Duties and Taxes added to it.

Answer #9

That answers the question, indeed. Most people here can not effort the original ones…

Answer #10

As in the case with anything. That’s why its best to tackle the issue from the Government side financial. Tax and Duty relief etc.
