Why did the pilgrim fathers die of malnutrition?

Answer #1

Which time? Which settlement? It happened a few times. The people who first came to Massachusetts didn’t know how to find food in such a wild and rugged land, and weren’t prepared for that first harsh winter. There was starvation, and there were deaths.

The same thing happened in Virginia where in addition to the problems already mention, a whole lot of resources were wasted in hunting for gold.

In both cases, the Native American peoples eventually taught the English settlers how to survive.
