Some people use drugs as an escape becaue while your high, your pretty much numb to the real world and emotions and you forget about reality. The problem with this however is the comedown from moost drugs leaves you feeling more depressed than before you started and i turns into vicious cycle…

The same reason people do all sorts of harmful things when they’re depressed (self harm, compulsive spending, risky behaviors like reckless driving, overeating, etc). They are trying to stop feeling bad. Basically they’re self medicating.
