Newborn pup

When can I trim a newborn puppies nails?

Answer #1

Harley and Pug are correct.

When they are little their nails do not bleed as easy. You can judge were to clip. Just clip the pointed tip off, do not clip into the curve of the nail. Small nail clippers do well for a puppy. Grinders do not well on those little nails.

The pup will let you know if you are cutting too close to the nerve or vein. I have clipped a lot of puppy nails and start them not too long after birth so that they do not scratch Mom.

When my pug had puppies, I trimmed them nails pretty much right away as when they nursed, they clawed mom(and each other) …like Harley said, the more you do it, the more they get used to having it done. I just used a regualr finger nail clipper at 1st since as babies the nails are soft and it wasnt too big to handle with their little paws/nails.

I started timming my chihuahua babies at 3 weeks of age, now you do have to be careful and have quick stop on hand or Flour, but mom may lick the flour off, but there is no age limit, and the more often you do this the more the dog will get use to it.

Answer #4

If he is newborn you may want to consider training him to allow the use of a grinding wheel. There are several trimmers that use this, but dogs don’t always like the electric motor noise. These make it easier to trim the dogs nails because you don’t need to look for the vein as much, just round the tip. You may need to do it more frequently, but that is better than hurting your pet isn’t it? Ask a friend if they have one, it will take a while to train your dog to not panic at these machines. Good luck.

Answer #5

you really don’t want to trim its nails until you can see the vain in each one! If you cut that vain they will bleed badly and it will hurt!
