How to make it as a photographer?

What’s the definition of “making it big” for you? What is your niche or specialty in your photography? For example some people do war portraits, or infra-red photography, or just macro photography.

Making it big will be very different in the kind of photography you do. In general, photography is a tight market, and it’s hard to get noticed, let alone make a lot of money out of what you do. For starters, most photographers who are really good only do it as a hobby for their passion, as you can’t really sustain getting stable and good money out of it.

If you like taking portrait shots you can show your portfolio to magazine companies for them to hire you. Or if you’re into fashion, start volunteering as a fashion photographer at fashion shows. Most of the time, you have to start out doing these stuff for free, to build your portfolio of brands/celebrities you can drop names of.

Being a full of professional photographer also means that you will need your own studio, with full professional lighting equipment, backdrops, and computers/processing lab. If you don’t, you’ll have to rent these studios, and they are really expensive. You can work out a deal with either your client or employer to absorb some of these costs, but as a professional you should have your own.
