Depends on what lawyer you can afford, depends on what state you live in, depends on the reason for killing, depends on whether you are sane…
I mean homicide isn’t neccessarily criminal. If you defend yourself… or if you only believe you are defending yourself, even if the other person maybe didn’t scare you on purpose, even if it’s only a misunderstanding, you might get away with no sentence at all. Depending on whether your lawyer is able to convince the judge that you weren’t planning to kill and you were feeling threatened in that situation.
If you kill sombody on purpose but you are proven to be insane, (for example, the voices in your head told you to kill) you may be locked away in a psychological clinic to keep you from being a menace to society. But you are still not criminal. Because you’re not responsible for your insanity. Also means: No sentence at all.
